Shinda’s Story

Meet Shinda, a dedicated wife and mother to three boys, diligently working in the Custodial Department at the Tacachale Developmental Disability Center. She has embarked on a life-changing journey with the Alachua Habitat Homeownership program, eagerly awaiting the chance to secure a stable and loving home for her boys - Jeremiah (17), Demetrius (10), and Dawan (8). Alachua, Florida, holds a special place in Shinda's heart as it is her hometown, and she looks forward to returning there to create generational wealth and leave behind a cherished legacy for her children.

For Shinda, family time is her most treasured pastime. Whether it's bonding over cooking sessions with her sisters or engaging in their favorite board games, visiting local springs, or preparing meals together, her family is her sanctuary. Jeremiah and Demetrius share a passion for basketball, with Jeremiah aspiring to join the Gainesville High School Basketball Team. Meanwhile, Dawan has discovered a love for soccer and finds joy in playing video games.

However, life has presented Shinda with challenges in today's tough economy. Currently residing in a cramped 3-bedroom apartment in a neighborhood with a history of gun violence, she worries about her boys' safety and well-being. She dreams of providing them with a secure environment where they can thrive without fear of violence and uncertainty.

Shinda's ambitions know no bounds. Alongside focusing on her career and education, she envisions obtaining her CNA license and establishing a compassionate at-home center for kids facing homelessness, runaways, or troubled circumstances. She aims to make a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable children and guide them towards a better future.

Her dreams also extend to building her own home with her oldest son by her side. She eagerly anticipates the knowledge she will gain on the build site and looks forward to constructing not just a house but also a future garden filled with love and memories.

During her time in the Habitat program, Shinda has cherished the experience of earning sweat equity hours. The camaraderie and positivity among the participants have made her feel like she has found a second family. Shinda is immensely grateful for the Habitat staff, appreciating their unwavering support and dedication to helping her family thrive.

In the face of obstacles, Shinda's determination shines brightly. With a vision of a secure home and a nurturing haven for others in need, she exemplifies the spirit of hope and resilience. As she moves forward with the Habitat program, Shinda is determined to build not only a home but also a foundation of love, compassion, and support for her beloved boys and the community she holds dear.
