Thine’s Story

Meet Thine, a single mom of 8 and grandmother of 14. Thine has worked at Walmart for 19 years and consistently works overnight shifts to support herself and her family. Thine was born and raised in Alachua County. She lived in the same neighborhood until she was 28 years old when a fire destroyed her family’s home. Following this tragedy, Thine had to relocate herself and her 8 children to a different neighborhood that she didn’t feel as safe in. After a grueling process, Thine and her children were able to qualify for Section 8 housing, where they have been living since.

Thine first heard about Alachua Habitat through her sister who told her about our Homeownership Program. Thine decided to apply, and before she knew it she found out that she had been accepted into the program. Alachua Women Build, an all-volunteer program of Alachua Habitat that builds homes in partnership with hard-working families often headed by women in need of safe, affordable housing, have partnered with Thine to build her new home. As a mother of 8 and grandmother of 14, Thine is most excited to host her family in a home that truly belongs to her. She looks forward to every aspect of this process—from construction, to moving in, to the first time celebrating with her family.

Thine would like to tell the donors and volunteers of Alachua Habitat that when an opportunity comes, take advantage of it. She urges everyone to prioritize hard work and determination because only then will dreams, like hers, come true.

Everyone Deserves a decent & affordable place to call home.

Strong and stable homes help build strong and stable communities.

Decent shelter is something we all need to thrive. With a little help, we all have the potential to stand n our own. Bold actions speak louder than words. Working together, side by side, promotes understanding and self-reliance.

No matter who we are or where we come from…

We all deserve to have a decent life. We deserve to feel strength and stability day after day. We deserve to know we have the power to care for ourselves and our families and build our futures. At Habitat for Humanity, this principle is what unites us. Through shelter, we empower. Our shared vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Because we are all humans. And every single one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future.

Alachua Habitat for Humanity

Founded in 1986, Alachua Habitat for Humanity is the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. We envision a world where everyone has a decent place to live and we work towards that vision by bringing people together to build strength, stability, and independence through shelter. To accomplish these goals, we invite people of all backgrounds, races, and religions to build houses “Habitat Houses“ together in partnership with families in need of affordable housing. Habitat houses are sold to homeowner families financed with mortgages they can afford. For more information visit our About Page.
