Gloria - Home Dedication
Alachua Habitat for Humanity Announces 173rd Home Dedication
Gainesville, FL – A local single mother to two talented children, Gloria has waited a long time to have a place she can call “Home.” On Saturday April 1st, at 10:00am Alachua Habitat for Humanity will hand over the keys to their 173rd newly constructed home that Gloria helped to build.
Four years ago, Gloria’s family relocated to Gainesville after Gloria’s daughter, Kayleigha, was diagnosed with Lupus. The proximity of specialists that could help Gloria care for Kayleigha was worth it, but the housing transition was rough. For a while, Gloria and her two children were sleeping on a couch and all of their belongings were stored in a small TV room. Now, she’s an employee to the Alachua County School Board, her daughter is a senior in high school who has won numerous scholarships and awards, and her son Quinton (aka L.J.) is looking towards his future and pursuing robotics and engineering.
Alachua Habitat for Humanity offers a hand-up, not a handout. Future homeowners must pay monthly mortgage payments set at less than 30% of their income and commit 250 hours of sweat equity. Their sweat equity requirement consists of working on their own home, working on the homes of others, and attending homeownership and financial literacy workshops.
Gloria’s home was funded through the generous contributions of Publix Super Market Charities, The Jack and Irma Hoonstra Foundation, and Capital City Bank, as well as support from the City of Gainesville. The construction of this home would not have been possible without the dedication of 32 volunteers working tirelessly for months alongside the future homeowner, Gloria.
