Alachua Habitat’s 13th House Announcement

Santa Fe College and Alachua Habitat for Humanity’s 13th House Hits the Road June 8th!

Gainesville, FL – For the 12th year, Alachua Habitat for Humanity has partnered with Santa Fe College to build a house at the Charles R. Perry Construction Institute with the help of students and apprentices. The house will be delivered to its destination site at 18446 NW 230th Drive, High Springs 32643 which was donated by the City of High Springs. The house is estimated to arrive at the site between 10:00 am – 10:30 am.

The house is built at the college in two sections by students and apprentices and offers them a unique, real-world experience that ultimately benefits the community. Each section is lifted up and loaded by crane onto a trailer, then slowly transported to the home site. At the site, a crane then lifts each of the sections off of the semi-trailer and sets them into place on the foundation built by Alachua Habitat. After the home is set, finishing touches will be added by the future homeowner, Habitat partners and volunteers.

“This home is part of a strong partnership with Santa Fe College, its apprenticeship programs, and Alachua Habitat,” said Alachua Habitat for Humanity’s Chief Outreach and Development Officer Stevie Doyle. “Students and apprentices are able to receive hands-on experience and directly contribute to building a home for a Habitat family.”

Alachua Habitat for Humanity builds homes for families who have a need for housing, have demonstrated the ability to pay a modest mortgage, and are willing to partner through sweat equity volunteering. These homes are not given away, rather homeowners take on the responsibility of paying a mortgage they can afford. Their sweat equity requirement consists of 250 hours working on their own home, working on the homes of others, and attending homeownership and financial literacy workshops.
