Tammy’s Story

Meet Tammy. She was born and raised in Missouri, where she later received her college degree. Tammy moved to South Florida in 2001 and worked as a tutor for Sylvan Learning Center and for private clients. While living in South Florida, Tammy encountered various obstacles related to housing. She struggled due to the high cost of living and stressful experiences with landlords and neighbors.

After deciding that the hustle and bustle was not what she wanted, Tammy moved to Gainesville in search of a more quiet and slow environment. She began tutoring at Santa Fe College, and has continued to work there and steadily increase the number of hours she works each week. While being employed at Santa Fe College, Tammy has taken courses to further her job skills and continue her growth as a professional. A career in social work is a dream of Tammy’s that she hopes to one day make a reality.

After finding hardship with housing again, Tammy decided to apply to the Alachua Habitat for Humanity Homeownership program in the summer of 2023. Upon receiving notification of her acceptance, Tammy was thrilled to be joining the other family partners in the homeownership program! With renewed hope, Tammy dedicated herself to her work, determined to achieve her goal of owning a home.

Tammy has expressed how this journey “will not only be about homeownership and completing something wonderful; it will be about making friendships along the way, collaborating with the community, and forming a lifelong partnership with a remarkable organization.”

Leading up to the start of construction, Tammy has expressed the “ultimate peace, tranquility, and stability” that her new home will offer. Tammy intends to use one bedroom as a master, the second for guests, and the third as a home office. With endless possibilities, Tammy most looks forward to cooking, watching TV and movies, reading, and cross-stitching in her new space. Most of all, she is eager to establish her own routine without interference.

Tammy pictures her new home as “a refuge, where [she] can grow, blossom, and work on [her] future endeavors.” Tammy's story is a testament to her passion, drive, and unwavering hope.
